Message I have read this shoud be done on conversions but the reason has never been mentioned, other than the fact that if you don't do it you don't get any cooling. OEM r134a cars don't have a TSV but they have a TCA (thermo control amplifier). The one thing you do need, if you want good cooling, is to replace the r12 condenser. This unit has 1/2 as many passes as the r134a model. R134a gets hotter on compression and needs a more efficient "cooler".
